On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, which falls on May 3rd, the Qatar Press Center seizes this opportunity to join journalists around the world in celebrating the growing role that journalism plays in covering events and raising awareness of societal issues.
On this occasion, the Center reaffirms its utmost solidarity with journalists and media professionals who continue their mission of reporting the truth from areas of repression, wars, armed conflicts, and internal unrest, as well as in exposing corruption. The Center also commemorates the 216 journalists who lost their lives while covering the ongoing aggression on Gaza since October 7, 2023.
The Center calls for the release of all detained, kidnapped, and forcibly disappeared journalists across various countries, and demands serious, comprehensive, and transparent international and UN investigations into all crimes committed against journalists in different regions of the world — particularly in Gaza and the West Bank, which are witnessing the largest campaign of extermination against journalists, through the bombing of their positions and homes, in an attempt to silence the Palestinian narrative, suppress free media, and obscure the truth.
World Press Freedom Day 2025 focuses on the impact of artificial intelligence on press freedom, information flow, and media independence, aligning with the global goal of ensuring public access to information and protecting fundamental freedoms (Target 16.10 of the Sustainable Development Goals).
In this context, the Center reaffirms its commitment to supporting the professional advancement of journalists through the adoption of the latest technologies and skills in journalism and media. It also renews its call to international UN, human rights, and media organizations to uphold press freedom, defend journalists’ rights, and support media institutions worldwide in benefiting from professional technologies as tools to enhance freedom of expression.
