The Qatar Press Center welcomes the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly declaring the State of Palestine’s eligibility for full membership in the United Nations. The Center notes that the decision embodies a reality and a historical truth on the ground, and a recognition of the rights of a people who have suffered for more than seven decades of foreign occupation, and points out the importance of the timing of the decision at a delicate stage that the Palestinian issue is going through in light of unprecedented Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people and their rights. He emphasizes that the resolution reflects an international consensus on the right of the State of Palestine to full membership in the United Nations, and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the embodiment of their independent and sovereign state. 143 countries voted in favor of the United Nations General Assembly resolution, while 25 abstained from voting, and 9 countries rejected the resolution. According to the draft resolution, the State of Palestine qualifies for membership in the United Nations in accordance with Article 4 of the Charter, and therefore it should be accepted into membership in the United Nations. The resolution affirmed that the General Assembly affirms the conviction that the State of Palestine is fully qualified for membership in the United Nations, noting the widespread affirmations of the support of the members of the United Nations for accepting the State of Palestine as a member of the United Nations. It requests the Secretary-General of the United Nations to take the necessary measures to implement this resolution. Additional rights and privileges for the participation of the State of Palestine will be activated as of the seventy-ninth session of the General Assembly, including occupying seats among member states, the right to register on the list of speakers and make statements on behalf of the group, and to submit and present proposals and amendments, in addition to the rest of the privileges enjoyed by delegations.
