The West Bank is witnessing an escalation in attacks against journalists, particularly while covering settler violence and the olive harvest season. These incidents include physical assaults, threats, obstruction of reporting, and destruction of equipment.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) documented 16 incidents of assault, threats, or obstruction during the first eight months of 2026, affecting at least 35 journalists.

The attacks included beatings, kicking, chasing journalists, and damaging their vehicles and equipment. Some journalists were forced to stop reporting or leave the scenes of events.

In 2025, the committee documented 11 incidents affecting at least 23 journalists. These cases demonstrate that attacks extend beyond physical injuries to include intimidation and restrictions on filming, limiting journalists’ ability to document events and report the news.

According to a report published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on August 20, 2026, the preceding three months witnessed incidents involving the use of tear gas and stun grenades, restrictions preventing journalists from accessing areas where military operations were taking place, detention and questioning related to their professional activities, as well as shootings and other assaults.

Washington Post Photojournalist

Heidi Levine, a photojournalist for The Washington Post, was beaten two days ago while covering the olive harvest season in the village of Abu Falah in the occupied West Bank. She was taken to hospital for treatment. Photographs taken by Agence France-Presse (AFP) showed her lying on a stretcher with visible injuries to her leg and hand.

The assault occurred ten days after AFP photographer Jaafar Ashtiyeh was beaten by settlers while covering the olive harvest in the West Bank, also requiring hospitalization.

Speaking to journalists from her hospital bed, Levine said that more than 50 masked settlers carrying sticks suddenly attacked her while she was working near the Palestinian villages of Turmus Ayya and Abu Falah in the central occupied West Bank.

“They suddenly attacked me. Fortunately, I was wearing my helmet and bulletproof vest, and I stayed pressed against the ground to try to protect my face,” she said. “They kept kicking me over and over again.”

American journalist Jasper Nathaniel, who was present at the scene, posted videos of the incident on the social media platform X. He alleged that the Israeli military “provided cover for the settlers with tear gas and machine guns,” adding that soldiers “shot a Palestinian bystander, pointed their weapons at paramedics, and pushed them as they attempted to treat him.”

The Washington Post reported that Levine was wearing a bulletproof vest clearly marked with the word “PRESS” on both the front and back.

Calls for a Comprehensive Investigation

Matt Murray, executive editor of The Washington Post, said in a statement: “We are deeply outraged by this unjustified assault on a journalist who was simply doing her job, and we demand that the authorities conduct a thorough investigation and follow up on the case.”

The Foreign Press Association (FPA), which represents international media organizations in Israel and the Palestinian territories, said that settlers stole Levine’s passport, phone, wallet, and equipment.

The association added that “this latest attack is part of a long series of violent assaults carried out by Israeli settlers against journalists and other civilians in the occupied West Bank.”

It also stated that Israeli authorities had, according to the association, ignored repeated calls to take action to stop such attacks.

Blatant Violence

Reporters Without Borders strongly condemned the assault and called on Israeli authorities to “put an end to this impunity and prosecute those responsible for this horrific attack.”

The organization stated that this “blatant violence” reflects what it described as the climate of impunity in which extremist Jewish settlers operate, often under the protection of the Israeli military.

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS) also condemned the attack on American photojournalist Heidi Levine, stating that it constituted a violation of press freedom and a direct attack on journalists carrying out their professional duties.

The syndicate noted that Levine has dedicated more than four decades of her professional career to covering wars and conflict zones and documenting events in Palestine.

It held the Israeli occupation authorities responsible for attacks occurring under the protection of, or in proximity to, Israeli forces, warning that impunity encourages further violations and threatens the safety of local and international journalists.

The syndicate called on the United Nations, international organizations concerned with press freedom and human rights, the US administration, the US Department of State, and American and international media institutions to take immediate action.

It demanded a serious investigation into the assault, accountability for those responsible, protection for media crews, and documentation of the incident as part of the record of violations committed against journalists.

These violations come amid escalating measures by the Israeli occupation authorities and attacks by settlers across the occupied West Bank, alongside efforts to expand settlements and settlement outposts and seize additional Palestinian land and water resources.

Attacks on journalists coincide with a series of violations across the governorates of Jerusalem, Hebron, Bethlehem, Ramallah, Nablus, Tulkarm, and the Jordan Valley.

These violations have included physical assaults, shootings, the burning of homes, factories, and olive trees, the uprooting of trees, livestock theft, the establishment of new settlement outposts, land bulldozing, and the destruction of electricity poles and water pipelines.
