Mr. Sadiq Mohammed Al-Emari, Director General of the Qatar Press Center, and Mr. Abdelkabir Khachichen, President of the National Union of the Moroccan Press, discussed strengthening cooperation in the fields of journalism and media, and exchanging expertise.
This took place during the Director General’s visit to the National Union of the Moroccan Press.
During the meeting, they discussed unifying efforts and coordinating initiatives to serve the shared interests of the profession and Arab issues, protect the rights and safety of journalists in the Arab world, keep pace with the digital transformations shaping the media landscape, exchange views on promoting press freedom, support initiatives to build an open and integrated Arab media space, promote a culture of dialogue and solidarity, and express the aspirations of Arab peoples in facing common challenges.
Mr. Sadiq Mohammed Al-Emari emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between professional journalistic bodies to support the advancement of the profession, freedom of opinion and expression, and the rights and safety of journalists. He called for a unified vision based on professional and ethical values, and for investing in media competencies to enhance the media’s role in expressing public sentiment and aspirations.
The Center’s Mission
Al-Emari presented the role and mission of the Qatar Press Center as an umbrella organization for journalists and media professionals in Qatar, aiming to develop journalistic culture and enhance the media's role in national development through organizing specialized courses, seminars, and open lectures to elevate journalistic performance and discuss key societal and global issues.
He said: "We seek to qualify journalistic cadres according to the latest global professional standards through training courses and by providing references and studies. We believe that the advancement of journalism begins with the individual and is reflected at the institutional level; thus, we work on both fronts simultaneously."
He stressed the Center’s keenness to strengthen cooperation with Arab and international professional organizations, pointing to collaborations with several Arab journalist unions, including those of Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine.
He added: "The Center is also a member of the Arab Journalists Union and the Gulf Press Union, and we aim to join the International Federation of Journalists soon. Our goal is to strengthen communication among journalists globally, exchange experiences, and expand the network of joint work."
Al-Emari also highlighted the Center’s strong commitment to supporting journalists' issues regionally and internationally. He said: "The Center was among the first to condemn Israeli attacks on Palestinian journalists since the outbreak of the aggression on October 7, 2023. We documented the killing of 214 Palestinian journalists and hosted several correspondents from Gaza to share their experiences and the bravery and sacrifices of journalists working under dangerous and tragic circumstances."
He continued: "We also issued international appeals through official letters to organizations such as Reporters Without Borders, the International Federation of Journalists, and Human Rights Watch to demand the protection of journalists and accountability for aggressors. Additionally, we expressed solidarity with Sudanese, Yemeni, and Syrian journalists who have faced severe violations."
Prospects for Cooperation
For his part, Abdelkabir Khachichen, President of the National Union of the Moroccan Press, emphasized the importance of launching joint professional initiatives and intensifying exchanges of visits with the Qatar Press Center to strengthen coordination and build institutional bridges that serve common concerns.
He pointed out that expanding cooperation among media institutions across Arab countries to broader horizons is a fundamental pillar for exchanging expertise in written, visual, and digital journalism, as well as unifying stances at regional and international forums in defense of media issues and journalists, and strengthening the Arab media presence globally.
