The Qatar Press Center expresses its full solidarity with the Lebanese Press Syndicate in taking the necessary measures and decisions to preserve the dignity of the press and journalists, regarding the crisis of the insulting remarks made by US envoy Thomas Barak during his recent press conference at the Presidential Palace in Baabda.
The Center affirms its support for the Lebanese Press Syndicate's statement in response to the US envoy's hurtful remarks directed at Lebanese journalists, which exceed the bounds of propriety and diplomacy and constitute a direct and unacceptable insult to journalists and media professionals, as well as a dangerous and unacceptable precedent.
The Center stresses the need to strengthen Arab journalistic solidarity and adopt a media charter that guarantees the dignity of journalists in the performance of their professional and national duties and deals firmly with any violations against them.
The US envoy caused a wave of outrage due to his treatment of Lebanese journalists, saying before the start of the press conference, addressing the journalists: “Be quiet for a moment... The moment the situation becomes chaotic and animalistic, we will leave.”
The Lebanese presidency expressed its regret for the remarks made inadvertently by one of its guests, referring to the US envoy to Syria, Tom Barak.
The Lebanese Presidency said in its statement: “While emphasizing its absolute respect for human dignity in general, it is important to renew its full appreciation to all journalists and media representatives accredited to it in particular, and to salute them for their efforts and hard work in performing their professional and national duties.”
