The Qatari Press Center strongly condemns the killing of Palestinian journalist Yahya Subaih in a massacre committed by the Israeli army, which bombed a densely populated area filled with shops and street vendors on Al-Wehda Street in Gaza City, leaving dozens of martyrs and wounded behind.
The Center reiterates its denunciation of the deliberate Israeli targeting of homes and locations where journalists are present, aiming to silence free media and prevent journalists from conveying the truth to the world—a flagrant violation of international and humanitarian law.
The Center calls on the international community and global human rights and media organizations to condemn the targeting of journalists in Gaza and to urgently act to hold Israel accountable in international courts for its war crimes against journalists. The culture of impunity has emboldened the Israeli occupation forces to continue their campaign of assassination, detention, and intimidation of journalists in plain sight of the world.
The Center urges the international community to pressure Israel to release detained journalists held under harsh conditions, deprived of their basic rights as stipulated by international laws and conventions.
Subaih, who worked for a local news agency, was killed just hours after holding his newborn daughter in his arms. He had posted a picture on Instagram showing him cradling her, with the caption:
"Welcome to our world, little princess. Praise be to God for the arrival of our precious daughter. May God make her righteous and a source of joy for our eyes."
With his death, the number of journalists killed in Gaza since the start of the genocide on October 7, 2023, has risen to 217, according to official sources.
Bringing the Killers to Justice
The Government Media Office in Gaza also condemned the systematic targeting and assassination of Palestinian journalists by Israeli forces, calling on the Arab Journalists Union and all press organizations worldwide to denounce these crimes.
It urged the international community and related organizations to hold Israel accountable in international courts and bring its war criminals to justice.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Office said:
"We also demand serious and effective international pressure to stop the ongoing genocide and to protect journalists in Gaza from being killed and assassinated."
Documenting the Massacre
According to Anadolu Agency's correspondent, the Israeli army carried out at least one airstrike on Al-Wehda Street, resulting in casualties.
The targeted area is densely populated and includes shops and street vendors frequented daily by residents.
Palestinian activists shared horrifying video clips on social media showing the moment of the Israeli strike.
The footage showed bodies and wounded people lying in pools of blood on Al-Wehda Street, as citizens rushed through thick smoke to rescue the injured and recover the dead.
The Israeli army continues to commit horrific massacres against Palestinian civilians amid local and international condemnation but without effective action to stop the repetition of these crimes.
These massacres occur alongside a systematic starvation policy employed by Israel against Gaza’s population. Human rights organizations, the United Nations, and various states report that Israel is using humanitarian aid as a weapon and a bargaining chip to pressure Hamas into accepting its conditions.
